Why are interpersonal skills important?

By  Alan Cox

Interpersonal skills important because everything you achieve  in life involves other people. Your happiness involves other people. Your involvement with others gives your life meaning.

You cannot not communicate!

Your body speaks louder than words. 1st impressions are made in less than a second with many studies indicating that 70% of people do not change their opinion.

Have you been able achieved a goal without involving or communicating with other people?

Doesn’t it make sense to make sure your Interpersonal communication is as good as you think it is?

To achieve anything meaningful, communication with other human beings is a must. Video conferencing and Facetime phone calls are good but nothing beats meeting face to face while enjoying a coffee or meal.

Why is listening important?

The most important part of communication is listening, which is the most used yet least taught skill we have.

When you listen you build trust and get to know the speaker at a deep level. You can ask the right question at the right time.

At a personal level meaning in life revolves around other people. When you listen deeply your spouse, child, friend, work colleague or an associate will be confident and open up to you.

So, while Relationships are at the core of your happiness and success the ability to effectively communicate with others is essential.

Humans' are social, tribal. If we are to live a meaningful life, we need people close to us, around us. And we need to communicate with them.

Communication is the heart of any business regardless of what you do, how many employees you have, and whom you sell.

Below are some videos

Bizfluent states that: The process of interpersonal communication in business involves sending and receiving messages with colleagues, managers, partners, customers and other business stakeholders. Effective interpersonal communication happens when the message is understood as it was intended.

Success Story agrees: Without interpersonal skills, business is impossible, as it is engaged with face to face communication. Business without interaction with one another and effective speaking is difficult. It can be said that interpersonal skill is the backbone of a business.

INVESTOPEDIA says: ...interpersonal skills allow people to communicate effectively, handle conflicts, and respond to others' needs accordingly.

Celine Fitzgerald from Carleton University's topic is 'Interpersonal Communication in the Future Worldis interesting.

In this video, Antoni Lacinai discusses the topic, if you want to be a great leader, you also want to be a great communicator.

Antoni adds another 3 tips for better communication. You want to communicate with energy, clarity, and empathy.

  • Energy so that I believe that you believe.
  • Clarity to take away as many misunderstandings as possible.
  • Empathy, so I feel that you get me.

For me, while the tips in these videos are excellent I believe that there is a lot of what we need to do but not a lot of how to do it.

Effective interpersonal communication is critical in all areas of life. To be a leader at home and work, to support family, friends and acquaintances in a practical, non-invasive way we must learn to listen.
