Another aspect of emotions is that they are contagious. When one of your hot buttons is pressed, the emotion you experience transfers to the other person. And then, guess what? You've got two angry people, and we all know how well that goes. When you're talking with an unhappy, stressed, frustrated, or angry person, pay attention to how you feel. Research indicates that if you share an office with a depressed person and you don't even need to be working on the same project or even for the same company, within five minutes, you'll feel less energetic and enthusiastic about your work. Their state of mind transfers across to you. And that has huge implications for marriages and organizations.
So emotions are contagious. What feelings do people you like generate inside you? And what about the person you're not keen on? What feelings do they cause you to experience? Next time you're talking with someone, use your lag time and take notice of your feelings. And where do these feelings come from? What attracts you to the person you like? What turns you off about the other person? Do you feel anxious or uncomfortable when you're around them? What do you do when you have to engage with a person who causes you to feel anxious? Take some quiet time and reflect and write down what you discover.
